The second National Cleaning Day in Kiryandongo brought hope and hands together. On Saturday, 29 August 2026, communities across Cluster S and Cluster A in the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement did not wait for cleaner surroundings to arrive — they built them.
Community leaders, volunteers and residents came together for the second round of Uganda’s National Cleaning Day, clearing waste, restoring drainage points, and reinforcing hygiene practices across the settlement.
The initiative responds directly to the Government of Uganda’s nationwide call for cleaner, healthier communities — implemented locally by Future Stars Center for Development and Capacity Building (FSC), in partnership with Mama Africa Organization for Humanitarian Services.
Future Stars Center does not treat sanitation as a one-off event. It is part of a wider commitment to community-led development — where residents themselves identify the need, organize the response, and sustain the results long after the campaign day ends. Across its work in Sudan and Uganda, FSC continues to support initiatives that place dignity, health and ownership at the center of humanitarian response.
None of this happens without the people who show up. Volunteers who spend a Saturday clearing drains. Community leaders who mobilize their neighbors. Residents who see the settlement not as a place they wait in, but a place they maintain.
A cleaner settlement is not the end goal. It is what a community capable of caring for itself looks like.
Refugee settlements like Kiryandongo face unique sanitation challenges — dense populations, limited infrastructure, and constrained resources all make hygiene initiatives more difficult, yet more necessary. By mobilizing residents directly rather than relying solely on external teams, campaigns like this one build lasting habits and local ownership. Cluster S and Cluster A residents did not simply clean for a day; they demonstrated a model of engagement that other clusters and settlements can replicate in the months ahead.
Future Stars Center plans to continue supporting these community-led efforts, working alongside Mama Africa Organization and local leadership to ensure that clean, healthy environments remain a shared priority — not a one-time event.
